MEN'S BASKETBALL: Number 23 Benedictine Edges Baker, 66-64

BALDWIN CITY, Kansas – The Baker University men’s basketball team falls to 5-6 on the year after losing 66-64 on a last-second shot to number 23 Benedictine College on Saturday inside the Collins Center, as Andre Yates knocked in a shot with 0.7 seconds remaining.

Benedictine had a hot shooting first half, going 52.7-percent from the field, but the Wildcats kept the Ravens’ score in check by holding them to zero offensive rebounds. The Ravens were also 6-of-11 beyond the arc.

The Wildcats trailed 33-29 at halftime and Javeion Gray led the ‘Cats in points, rebounds and assists, going 19-4-3 for the game. Vandy Hopson added 14, going 8-of-12 from the free-throw line. His 14 points matched a career high, he also scored 14 at Clarke earlier in the year.

Baker held a 64-62 lead with 1:48 to go, but the Ravens were able to tie the game and then take the lead on two Yates baskets. Yates was the high scorer for the game with 22 points.

For the game, the Wildcats ended with a higher field goal percentage, but the Ravens had an advantage by shooting 8-of-20 on three-point baskets, and 14-of-15 from the free throw line.

The Wildcats now stand at 3-5 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference, while Benedictine is now tied for third-place in the conference with Grand View University, as they both are 6-2 in the Heart, 8-3 overall.

The Wildcats will next take on McPherson College at 2 p.m Saturday, December 31 at Collins Center. The Bulldogs are 6-6 on the season. Baker also has an exhibition game at NCAA DII Missouri Western on Sunday, December 18 at 2 p.m.
