Number 13 Baker Women's Basketball Opens Season with Win over Ottawa

ATCHISON, Kansas – The defending NAIA National Championship Runner-up number 13 ranked Baker Women’s Basketball team opened up the 2016-17 season with an 81-70 win over Ottawa on Friday in day one of the Heart/KCAC Classic at Benedictine College.

Five players scored in double digits for the Wildcats, led by Mackenzie Cook and Anna Hignight with 13 points. Hignight went 3-of-6 from three-point range in her first game with the Wildcats, while Cook went 5-of-7 from the field.

Sydney Buchel stuffed the stat sheet for the Wildcats, tying for the team lead in rebounds with nine along with Cook, adding four assists and a team-high four blocks.

As a team, the Wildcats shot 47.5 percent, while holding the Braves to a 37.4 mark from the field.

The Braves started off the game with an early 9-2 run, before the Wildcats came back and tied the game at 9-9.

BU led by as many as 12 points before the Braves pulled to within nine points, giving the Wildcats a 41-32 halftime lead.

The Wildcats’ offensive efficiency showed with the 14 assists in the first half, 21 for the game. Baker was led by point guard Jessica Zweifel’s eight assists and the eight assists gave Zweifel a career high, and her 10 points was the third-highest total of her career.

The second half started with the Braves cutting into the Baker lead slightly, as Ottawa won the quarter 20-18. BU held off the Braves in the fourth, edging Ottawa 22-18 in the final quarter. The Braves were able to keep close with free throws, taking a 27-11 advantage over the Wildcats on the line.

Baker will next take on the University of Saint Mary in the second game of the Classic at 1:00 p.m. Saturday in Atchison, Kansas.
