Baker Men's Basketball Upsets Number 3 William Penn, 88-85

BALDWIN CITY, Kansas – The Baker University men’s basketball team earned a huge Heart of America Athletic Conference upset win on Saturday, as they defeated number 3 ranked William Penn, 88-85, inside the Collins Center.

Javeion Gray had a team-high 15 first half points, including a four-point play early in the first half to give the Wildcats an early 7-2 lead.

Baker led by as many as 19 in the first half, before taking a 55-37 halftime lead. Tyrome Parker came off the bench to lead the Wildcats in assists in the half with five, and CJ Bolton led the team in rebounds in the first half with four, also coming off the bench.

The Wildcats were able to get to the line frequently with 23 free-throw attempts in the first half, 39 for the game. Gray scored 12 of his 21 points from the free throw line.

Baker lost the lead with 9:10 remaining, when the Statesmen hit two free throws to go up 69-67.

William Penn bounced back from a 38-percent shooting first half to hit 12-of-24 field goals in the second half.

The Statesmen led by as many as six points before the Wildcats were able to take a 6-0 run to tie the game up at 80-80 with 2:09 remaining.

With BU trailing 84-83 in the final minute, Taylor Johnson hit the go-ahead basket, and three free throws for BU to bring the game to its final of 88-85.

Now at 3-3, the Wildcats will face the Missouri Valley College Vikings at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in Marshall, Missouri. The Vikings are 3-2 on the season, losing to Graceland University 99-77 Saturday.
