Baker Men's Basketball Opens Season with 78-64 Win at Ottawa

BALDWIN CITY, Kansas – The Baker University men’s basketball team opened up the 2016-17 season with a bang, as they defeated Ottawa, 78-64, on Tuesday night.

The Wildcats used a 31-27 halftime lead and then outscored the Braves, 47-37, in the second half to cruise to a 14-point win.

It was the season opener for both squads. Baker caused 14 Braves turnovers and outrebounded Ottawa, 49-40.

Starting point guard Javeion Gray led Baker in scoring with 13, and three other teammates joined him in double figures, as Brett Elfritz scored 12 points in his first collegiate game. Tyrome Parker also poured in 12 points and newcomer Tyree Peter scored 10.

The Wildcats shot 46.4-percent from the floor and nailed seven three-point field goals. Nathan Guscott and Parker led the team with three steals each and Vandy Hopson led the team with eight rebounds.

Ottawa shot 32.4-percent from the floor but hit 13 three-point field goals. Logan Bullinger led all players with 17 points.

Baker will next hit the road to face number 6 ranked Columbia College on Friday, Nov. 4 at 7 p.m. and then will face (RV) William Woods on Saturday at 3 p.m. at the Columbia College Classic.
