SOFTBALL: Ottawa Spoils Baker's Home Doubleheader with Sweep

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – The Baker University softball team fell to Ottawa, 2-0 in nine innings and 3-2 in seven on Monday evening inside Cavaness Field.

Ottawa improved to 9-12 overall, while the Wildcats fell to 14-8.

In game one, both teams combined for just six total hits and the games starters combined for 21 strikeouts, but the Braves prevailed, 2-0, in nine innings.

The games winning hit came off of the bat of Ellena Cott-Laurie, as she battled for a 10-pitch at bat against starter Olivia Brees. Cott-Laurie singled to left field, scoring Jenna Stigge and Mica Michaud.

Gabby Markham and Brees were impressive in the circle, as Brees struck out 12 batters in nine innings, while Markham struck out nine batters in the complete game shutout and allowed just one hit and one walk. Lucy Staats supplied Baker with its hit in game one.

In game two, Ottawa jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, but Baker climbed back for a run in the first and another in the fourth to tie things up.

Ottawa took the lead for good in the top of the sixth and Markham again closed the door on Baker with a perfect seventh inning, earning the save.

Hannah Tolliver and Allie Zahn each had two hits for Baker in game two and Tolliver along with Wheeler earned the two RBI’s.
